Hi Bob, I flew my first coupe for about 120 hrs on auto gas, and I used everything from the cheap-o Beacon quik-e-mart stuff to the most expensive Shell and Chevron. Absolutely no difference, at any time of the year. I have used it in my other 2 coupes (presently still using it). There are definitely 2 major (opposing) schools of thought. The subject always comes up at every IA renewal that I go to, and at the seminar there is usually an engine representative who vehemently denounces auto gas. Then you have the other side, with the EAA and their research that comes with every auto gas STC that you buy. It's quite extensive research and basically says that auto gas is just as save as avgas. Maybe the problems come from gas stations that have poor quality control or older tanks. I know that in California, almost all gas stations now have the new fiberglass tanks, and the quality has always been good. I look at what goes into my gas cans, and I look at what comes out, and I look at what is in my fuel sumps before and between flights- and it's always good. I dont know if the water problem is so much the gas, as it might be deteriorated or mis-fitting gas caps and gas cap seals on our planes. Or maybe some gas stations in some areas of the country have really old tanks that trap water. I know that alcohol will temporarily mix with gas, and be hard to detect, but water will not- and you will see it in your gas can. If it wasnt in your gas can, then it wasnt somehow mysteriously in the gas. It had to have come from the airplane.
