I do this all the time.  I'll dial-up, grab all my e-mail and disconnect
then proceed to read/answer/write e-mail, then re-connect to send out any newly 
queued e-mail in batch.

We may be in a minority, but it's also a fairly common occurence.
Now that I have leafnode up and running and sucking news from
News.CIS.DFN.DE, I'll be doing this with usenet posts as well.
