I'm the Xacc-1.0.18's french translator (messages,menus, documentation
online in Xacc, website) and for me the linas's solution : all the strings
msgs and menus into one file
(where there is for example:
#define XACC_HELP_ABOUT_STR "About GnuCash...")
(and change "About Gnucash..." by " A propos de Gnucash..." for the french
translation)
is the best solution because gettext is a good solution only for somes
software but not for Xacc/Gnucash.
In Xacc , there is HTML files (online documentation in Xacc) and gettext
don't convert them in *.po file
In Xacc , I need to change some lines in QIFIO.c for import correctly the
Microsoft Money V3.0 french files with the french format DD/MM/YY and not
MM/DD/YY.
In Xacc , I need to change the currency unit $ by F(for french francs).
For me the best solution for the translator is to translate a file, for
example messageXX.h
(with XX, for the country ,US for the USA , FR for the France...) where
there is by default english word and the tranlator change theses words by
them of this language, and the curency unit of this country (the same
things in the message.h for the language for the USA and United Kingdom but
not the same curency unit).And after that translate the HTML online
documentation files.
We need to create a file where somebody can find information for
adapt/translate Xacc/Gnucash in his language and for his country.
We need to modify ./configure for selecting the good messagesXX.h to
compile.
We need to modify the makefile when you type "make install" it select the
good repertory with the good online documentation to install.
We need to create one binary package for each country because each country
have banking specifity.
This is my opinion with my experience of french translator.
I think in one or two week , I begin to translate all menus and message in
Gnucash-1.1.27 in french, but I would like that Linas add all menus and
messages displayed in Gnucash in one message.h file.It is possible Linas?
