What ACCOUNT BALANCES have a Description, Memo, or Notes? You are talking about TRANSACTIONS. The reports in question are only dealing with account balances as they are, not recomputing balances based on what transactions you wanted included in the balance. You can "filter ACCOUNTS" (report on all or a subset).

You are wanting to avoid the labor of setting your CoA properly. To let you combine several accounts. Post transactions to any of these just into one and "separate later by some filtering rule). Standard/traditional accounting allows just ONE tree structure for the ledger << the tags, labels, etc. that you miss are effectively allowing alternate tree structures to exist >>

Assign each trip a unique code/word/ID and ensure that went into the

overlapped on dates you could separate them.
Could you say a bit more about what a user would do? I looked in the
options for the Income Statement, and there doesn't seem to be a way to
tell it to filter based on Description, Memo, or Notes.

Assuming this is vacation, not a trip for business, as each expense
occurs I debit Expenses:Vacations, credit the appropriate credit card or
cash account, and put details on the Description line.

I've never wanted a report for this specifically, but if I did I would
filter by dates in the report options.
