We may be talking past each other.

First, I'm not the one desiring that report, but I could see a use case for it and I might want/need it in the future.

Second, I don't see the absolute requirement to clutter a tree up with sub-accounts for reporting purposes. Yes, I understand GnuCash doesn't officially offer the ability of multi-dimensional reporting, but it is possible to do this in limited fashion.

This is an advantage of computers over pen & paper. I see no good reason not to make use of it while keeping the CoA 'clean'.

To each their own. We aren't discussing the needs of publicly traded companies filing SEC reports. Though indeed, they are more likely to use Managerial Accounting, they aren't going to be using GnuCash. Just because the 'big boys' use such reports doesn't mean the rest of us doing so is in anyway 'improper'.

Adrien

No, you misunderstood what I meant by setting the CoA properly. You are asking for a report involvingĀ  ACCOUNT BALANCES where only some of the transactions in that account are included. IF you want that, it means the CoA was structured incorrectly for your purposes, that your one account should have been a parent account with two children, one for the transactions you wanted included and one for the restĀ  (or as many children as needed).

You are trying to mimic "tagging" where transactions can be heaped together in one account but later LOGICALLY segregated into several accounts. Effectively giving you multiple versions of the CoA.
