A styled layer descriptor is one of the lesser known elements of OGC WMS (not supported by all of them -- I think MapServer does) ... they allow you to submit styles to the WMS so that they are styled serverside according to clientside specifications (in an xml file) this can allow some things to be drawn and others not.. and others color coded by attributes.
