Neither an honest nor dishonest mistake, just an automatic one. I have
seen even worse. Google Translate will occasionally flip a sentence's
meaning completely upside down, for instance by leaving out a "not" or
adding one, or switching subject and object of a sentence. Or it can
get too eager and translate names and things that shouldn't be
translated, such as when it translated French articles about Sarkozy
to be about Bush instead.
Sometimes it will include only vaguely related words from completely
different languages - try translating the Icelandic anthem to English
for one bizarre example. It's very hard to say what kind of error
Google translate could NOT do on its own!

At least one person from Google reads this forum occasionally. I'm
pretty sure they know about the general issue.
