I'm sorry you've had such a poor experience. I have to say that after about a year of off and on linux use, I've finally realized that nothing makes me happier than standard ubuntu with gnome. It does everything I need it to do, and then some, and the only time I ever have to use windows is for gaming now. The freedom is liberating. I do not feel held back at all by it.
