Well, I've been here just recently. Here are some reasons why I keep returning to Linux in some form or another.
My kids know how to install every trampy piece of social networking stuff known to man. My stepchildren borrow my wifes XP laptop, they install games, they install AIM (which frequently locks up the 2.6 GHz Turion laptop, 10 minutes or more have to pass and then it will work again, slowly), the kids install Limewire, you name it. If I use Linux and they need to use my system for anything, I make a user account for each of them, and they CANNOT install stuff that will harm EVERYONE else. A few days ago, her laptop began rebooting only a second after first showing the Windows desktop. Reboot, reboot, reboot. I popped in a Knoppix Linux 5.1.1 live CD, and booted it up FIRST try. I rescued all my wifes photos. Everything worked, even the wireless card. I know I CAN'T do that with Windows! I know that the same Firefox 'already running' problem happens on an XP Pro 64 system, so what is the big deal there? did you try that same thing in Windows? And how did you get gOS rebooted so quickly after Firefox crashed it? The Firefox lockout is only a few seconds. The movies part I can understand, a little, but you have to install the proprietary, not for free codecs which are part of what makes Windows cost money and are not free of cost. Linux usually can't get those files because we are not able to purchase licenses. Your webcam likely does not work now, but might work in a few months. I know, I know "Windows works fine". Might that be because nobody goes to the geek stores and demands to shop for Linux compatible devices? There are a few webcams which are supported in Linux, but that support is not usually because the hardware maker MADE the Linux drivers, any supported web cams are usually supported ONLY because somebody who uses Linux has VOLUNTARILY reverse engineered the drivers. You paid for Windows devices, you got no Linux support, so what is the big deal? Seriously, Linux is going to be behind the game for some time because Microsoft makes hardware companies sign agreements.
