Sure I accept that the majority may not - I am referring to the complex patient seeing multiple providers. These patients seem more willing to accept the need for such a system (at least the ones I have spoken to) - obviously proper security and consent procedures would have to be followed. There seems to have such slow progress on a networked record - I think a interested group of amateurs could get something going when the huge investment has achieved little. When I was in Broome recently I spoke to a rural doc who worked in the Geraldton region. They had shared on call over an area of several hundred km. He said they had set up a networked system with a patient summary several years ago - it seems it wasnt that hard. Dont know what happened to it tho..

Ian has asked the BIG question. Why would patients who wished to keep their clinical details confidential want a GP to post THEIR medical details anywhere in cyberspace?

These GP Management Plans seem tailor made to be posted on the net as a
basis for a distributed health record a la HealthConnect. Add a
medication list and you have a useful resource for patient management.
What would it take to do a demo project to make them available on the
net using servers hosted by list members?
Using an agreed template a "Pitifil on steroids" could extract the data
and lob it to the central server.
The million-dollar question is: who gets access to the server, and
how?

would you give a PIN number to the patient, to give to the specialist/admitting
registrar?
or would you let the appropriate people (say ED charge nurse) have a password
allowing access to all summaries from GPs in the area? With an automatic
mailback
to the GP whenever a file is accessed by a hospital person as a security
measure.
