Hi Syan,

At the risk of appearing as pushing a product (not my purpose), but rather with the intention of clarifying how different software houses build different features in their products, I can speak for Insight and we do the following:

how little it lets you do e.g. I wanted to get an estimate of

A date range and two mouse clicks get you that information in Insight, one more click in any one of several additional dimensions will allow you to drill down into your data and display the complete invoice, or the ageing of it, or the reminders sent for that account, or cheque payment details, etc

scope. Was wondering, anyone daring enough to use a spreadsheet
for financials , or is it all myob ? what besides practice management

Two mouse clicks and Insight exports to an excel file selected financial information. The file is suitable for import to myob or to be consumed by excel. Our assumption is that every practice will use a decent accounting package such as myob or equivalent, so Insight is not a replacement package for that.

software, what other accounting packages are used alongside, or are
some practice management software complete in themselves.
It's to do with the taxation rules compliance expertise, isn't it,
which marks out myob's scent ?

Two mouse clicks and Insight automatically generates the ATO's BAS for the current taxation Quarter and the selected doctor in the practice. Including the GST component of the practice's total sales during the Quarter (ie. Medical Reports, Driving License, etc)

You can display any past Quarter (1~4) of any current or past taxation year. The selected doctor's turn over is shown against the total practice takings including the providers % of sales contributed to the practice. This feature is not meant to replace the accountant, but rather to assist the practice in presenting or preparing this information to the accountant, it is also a quick way of estimating your accrued BAS taxation liabilities by the end of the Quarter before you need to pay.

I am sure that other software houses could have this very same features or more if they wanted to, unfortunately I do not have an answer for you. I guess is up to the users of a product to request or push for those desired features.

Hope it helps with giving an idea on how some other people look at their data.

Mario
