I can't speak for all vendors, but those I have regular contact realise it
is all about timely support and customer satisfaction. There is choice in
the market and unhappy customers have many options.

touch my practice server is when OS and software patches are released.

Proprietary <> unstable.
Of the three operating systems I have used Windows is the most unstable.
This is a particularly poignant point for me at the moment having
watched MS Server 2000 eat itself last night following the installation
of a new network card.
I have only ever used proprietary EHRs. I would not describe the one I
am most familiar with as stable.
