Richard,

I believe you are being unfairly harsh with the developers of Growl.

First off, it is entirely likely you installed an application that
also installed growl which is the little utility that puts up
notification messages on your screen.

Secondly, you can turn the update notifications off by going into System
Preferences, selecting Growl, clicking on the about tab and removing
the check from "Check for updates automatically". The update notification
is there to inform you of new software that you are running. It's there
because developers typically IMPROVE their product over time and
Growl is no different. If you don't want those bug fixes and improvements
it's your loss but that's also your choice. I would hardly consider it
SPAM or anonymous since clicking on the notification makes it go away and
opens a web page to download the most recent version. I actually think
that's a very elegant way of distributing free software. I also like it
when Firefox and/or Safari uses Growl to put up notices that tell me
downloads have finished or new FireFox Add-On's are available.

Lastly, although I'm not one of the developers, this is the correct
forum to contact them and I'm sure they have read your message.

Dear Growl Developers:

I am getting repeated reminders on my desktop to download the new
version of Growl. I am not sure what Growl is, and may or may not be
interested in a new version, but do not like this type of intrusive
reminder that will not go away.

Could the Growl team please eliminate this kind of update reminder?

I am also concerned that there is no direct way to contact the
developers, or so it seems. I suggest that there should be a way to
contact these folks. They seem to be OK with posting annoying,
anonymous messages (almost like SPAM) on my desktop, but do not seem
to want to be accountable.

Richard
