Michael,
I just ran my Valentine on top of my stock dash, under the windshield
(suction cup to windshield, super velcro to dash) for a couple of years
before I made my add'l dash (John L design). It's not that wet here in
Calif and is protected enough from the weather in this location. For
better security, I made a little Aluminum V plate, screwed to the top of
the dash to provide a flat shelf. Some velcro and cable tie secured it
enough that someone would need some cutters to get it off.
Other comments from John are very true - can't mount or locate where
metal is in front or behind, being there on dash is in good eye view of
rest of your instruments and the higher, the better.
Another feature to consider is the laser detector which requires the
ability to see light - put it in luggage box or behind painted fairing
piece and you disable this feature.
Of course, most consider laser detection to be a waste - you get tagged
by laser, your dead because it is so fast, there is no time for you to
react. Only hope is that you pick up a signal from someone getting
"shot" in front of you before you get "shot". So this is personal
preference. Most prefer to forgo this feature for the other benefits of
hiding it away. All based on your preferences.
