Actually that is probably the best advice given so far. The new biker has a lot of little things he/she has to learn (the warning in an earlier e-mail about planting the foot on loose sand or gravel is a good example) and a $3000 bike might be better for that. Used Nighthawks can be had for that and new ones retail for $5800. The bike is low maintenance (hydraulic lifters if I recall) and no expensive plastic to repair in event of the parking lot tip overs. The carrying capacity is in the 300's lbs domain, so you will exceed the GVWR if you carry a passenger (this will be the case on any bike). The performance is not bad either so you wont get tired of the bike after a few months. Another bike to consider along the same lines is the Kawasaki KR-7S. It has a front fairing and optional factory hardbags. You can see it here:

They are pretty "bullet proof" and they look good even with a clear wind screen on the front. The Nighthawk won't burn up the canyons but it certainly screams relability and has decent power. You can always move up after your experience level grows. (Slam away, if you must). Don't buy the Bandit!! That engine is having problems with burning oil. Suzuki has admitted it and is replacing the pistons with pistons from an earlier year (1999). This is a KNOWN problem on the 2000-2002 Bandito's! That is a big factor pushing me towards the other bike, and keeping my eye open for a GTS in the paper in the next couple of years.
