Thanks for all the input.....I really think I have a tumbler hung up in the
lock.  I have an appointment with the locksmith in the morning. I am going
look closely at the mechanism when I get it off to see if I can jury rig an
emergency bypass  to the lock.  A small piece of st.st leader hooked around
the latch hidden but accessible from out side might work.
