That's bizarre, because this show made it seem that they were talking about the everyday bulletproof vest. I'm certain I remember it correctly, because I remember being very surprised that it wasn't the way you are now describing it. So since then, I've always assumed that it was the way this documentary described it. How totally odd.
They made a huge deal about how the bulletproof vest relied on the entire facing to absorb the kinetic energy, stop the bullet, and prevent damage to the wearer, and that once it absorbed the first bullet, it could no longer effectively do this, and that developing the bulletproof vest that could reliably stop two or even three bullets was a goal...
