If you get more then one container in a shuttle, you can have passanger containers and lifesupport in a different container that is going to be connected.
Or you could have passanger containers smaller then cargo containers and a attachable lifesupport module that brings it to full size. That way you can use standard shuttles for internal containers. You can even reuse the lifesupport modules on the next run. It does not prevent you from having to transport the life support modules up and down and up and down... though.
