Yea, if you are trying to bruise his ego, maybe you need to get out of
the GM chair for a while.  Once you make things personal, then you're
out to take the fun out of it.  If you are trying to reign him in,
there are better ways.

Give the bad guys a wyvern or falcon and have him attack the
were-eagle...  you can tailor the adversary to give it a slight
advantage (better flying skill/agility, or more damage.  A smaller
adversary will be more manuverable and make your players were-eagle
vulnerable.  In real life, I've seen larger birds driven off by
smaller birds, as the smaller birds are more manuverable and can
attack the bigger bird's head with impunity.
