I did not read through the spell back then, to check if the GM had done it right, but there is a Repel Birds or similiar spell somewhere in animal collage. The way the GM had used it, it had made it impossible for our bird PCs (one permanent owl and a falcon shapeshifter) to enter the room enchanted with it in birdform. The shapeshifter solved the problem by flying to the windowsill and changing form there.
The most obvious solution would be a cavern system or similiar, that simply had not place for a bird with large wingspan to fly there, as others have already mentioned.
