Well, that could be either some part of the Tiber river (which flows
through Rome itself) or the Aniene river (which joins the Tiber north of
Rome).
Around dusk, it can be reasonably expected, that you will not meet any
random travellers. Or at least you can assume, that if random travellers
come and see something suspicious happen, it will take hours if not
until the next day, until any sort of guard that checks this out comes.
Nope, there pretty much won't be that sort of thing next to a bridge
over a navigable river *anywhere*, let alone within two hours of Rome.
