Hello Johannes, some options how to involve the PCs:
* They're hired for some task in one of the plots, and if the players know dramatic conventions, they'll of course unravel the plot and clear their names by themselves. * As above, but they're set up as the fall guys. * The PCs have a financial interest in the people who are being set up as the fall guys. You said they're well on their way to manumission. Do they stash their money under their beds, or is it invested somewhere? * The flamen is not the only target of the plotters, and they stumble on the plot in a different investigation, already predisposed to go after the bad guys. Of course those are pretty generic options, without much Rome in them. * One of the pawns is a client of one of their owners. Unless resolved quickly and covertly, the whole affair will reflect badly on the patron. * One of the pawns is from the same tribe/clan as one of the PCs. These is a nasty pogrom brewing in the back alleys.
