Incidentally, plausible candidates include the Ponte Nomentano and the Ponte Salario. They're closer to one hour from the walls than two, but that's probably about as well as you'll do. Both bridges were fortified during the middle ages, and during the Roman period might have been watched by the Praetorian Guard, but I don't believe there was a highway patrol at this time in history (in Rome itself you have the urban cohorts and the vigiles), so your main concern would be whoever actually lived near the bridge. There probably would be someone; bridges are valuable property.
