I thought sling-shot maneuvers were primarily to change direction with minimal delta-v and to maximize your effective delta-v for acceleration by taking advantage of the altitude based potential energy of your fuel for greater acceleration.(The same acceleration/fuel burn in a lower/faster orbit gives more energy because of m*v*v and that energy basically comes form leaving that fuel in a lower orbit)
As such sling-shots only really matter for limited delta-v flight paths, and that is why those are so messy.
