What DR would the animal need to make that feasible? But you could
have a caravan of animal-drawn wheeled forts. Each night they draw
into a circle, with the animals protected inside. Armored against
handheld bows and crossbows, armed with ballista which outrange
handheld weapons.
A DR around 10 and decent Hitpoints should make it very hard to take the
draft animal down, with handheld low tech weapons. If the animal already
has some non flexible armour (giant insect, fast giant turtle) it also
could become more feasable to put even more armour on in, so it does not
all have to be natrual armour.
The wagon circle sounds feasable too, i would not be too suprised if it
was historical though.
A mobile home, for chieftains who want to imitate the grav flyers
of the Evil Overlords.
A fancy classic gypsy wagon, or did you think about something else.
