Mike hasn't defined the background for his PCs yet, right? I
could see several options:
My comments before were indeed aimed for the vehicle as pc vehicle, and
the campain resembling SG proper (the pcs are SG 1 but with a vehicle)
* The PCs are from a twenty-minutes-into-the-future Earth, but
they are mostly cut off from supply. Think SG Atlantis or SG
Universe.
That has the advantage, that you easily can answer questions like "why are
thoose vehicles assigned for the mission and not ones more suitable" and
the disadvantage, that once you have established that some resource is not
there, you need an explaination, if you want to have it in a futrue
adventure.
* The PCs are from one of the Evil Overlord factions, perhaps
defectors or the survivors of a defeated Overlord.
* The PCs are 'freelance adventurers' who are not part of either
side. Like Vala or Ronon from Stargate before they joined up
with the Terrans.
It is an odd situation, if the players know more about the alien cultrue
and thechnology their pcs contact, then about their own. You can do that,
but it can be a challange. Or the background has to be very well
established before the start of the campain.
Overall IMO that is an approach, that is more suited for books, movies or
other non interactive storytelling, then for RPGs.
* What Mike mentioned recently, having typical PCs on 'fantasy'
worlds which are actually science fiction.
"If you steal the red ore from the goddess, lad, remember that
she will send her dragons after you. They fly faster than the
fastest horse, they can see in the dark, and the fiery breath
can hit a man at a thousand paces. No, better to earn a magic
sword in her service." How does that sound as an adventure?
Which makes a pc vehicle a bit of a stretch.
I guess the last 3 approaches likely work best, if you leave Terra out of
the picture completly.
