I think that a four-person team is too small for an extended posting to a ship. If a ship only had space for that few it'd be better served just giving the crew security training, especially if Marines always come with powered suits - the long-term maintenance and logistics requirements for four suits would be considerably more than half that for eight, so it would be very inefficient. I would expect no less than a platoon on a ship that is expected to cruise solo for any period, and probably no less than a squad/section of 8-12 on a ship that's never expected to be away from a fleet or base for any length of time. A fire-team is what gets put into a boat for a search of a suspicious vessel or asteroid habitat.

The exception would be small stealthy spec-ops insertion and recovery ships, which might well often only carry 2-6 person teams, and only have space for 8 with hot bunking and sleeping on top of the mission supplies, etc.
