Instead there might be a secret tunnel leading somewhere.
The tunnel connects several houses. Of course that raises the
question just how long they are and who built them. The other
owners don't know about the network, which allows people with
a map to listen to all sorts of interesting conversations.
I don't think the pcs have the intention to play NSA. But propably someone
else, who comes to the house regulary, which then can lead to
complications. I'll have to think about who that should be.
The tunnel connects several houses and interesting people use
part of the network for their own purposes. They think that
the other tunnels are unsafe and don't enter them. They will
be unhappy if there are other footprints at an intersection.
That was roughly what i was thinking about first. Though what could their
purposes be? It could lead to some sort of bat cave, either used mainly
because it is cool to have a bat cave as party room, or because they put
stolen goods or weapons for a coup there. I'm not really sure, which gives
the best adventure seeds yet.
It might be to move from one villa to others or to secretly leave one or
more villas.
The tunnel leads to the treasure vault of a temple. Only one
thin wall remains. Or the vault is empty and people will ask
really soon now who purchased the villa and why.
The tunnel leads out of (or into) the city walls.
The evidence in the secret room would hurt the reputation of
the long-dead head of an important family. The family knows
that the evidence exists, but not where it is. Any hint that
it might be in play again will trigger a frantic multi-side
struggle.
Literally having a corpse in the cellar (for thoose who don't speak
German, thats the German expression for a skeleton in the closet) would
have some apeal, but how long will you get something usefull out of it,
with the forensics of that time? So that seems not practical at first.
It could be incriminating documents and if they had been put their by a
blackmailer, not by the incriminated, there is an explaination why they
had not been destroyed. Having blackmail material stored is a bit
incriminating in itself too.
It also might be something incriminating, that has sentimental value for
the incriminated, like some signed gift from someone considered a villian
nowerdays. Like in an "The Persuaders" episode, where the Nazi
collaborateur still keeps some statuette signed by Hitler as souveneir,
even though it prooves it was him, who gave some information to the Nazis.
The secret room is a secret prison. After a day or so the
players hear the tapping of some prisoner(s) who are more
thirsty than afraid of drawing the ire of the jailers.
In that case it is clear, that the former owner will have to be called
Friclus or Friclis or something similar*. But why sell a villa with live
prisoners?
Or if Friclus died unexpectedly or had to flee in a hurry, the time
between the last feeding of the prisoners and when the pcs move in is a
bit of a stretch. Inheritance, sale and all that have to happen in
between.
Some of his slaves might have kept things running, but unless they are the
totally devoted and totally stupid type of minion, they need to have some
motivation for continuing and then leaving, without getting rid of the
prisoners first.
