A TL10 battlesuit trooper with a support weapon, I dare say, will be more accurate than a TL7 sniper. By TL10, snipers will likely be replaced by soldiers with small missiles. >> Note that 20mm rounds are more than twice the wps of 7.62mm >> rounds, but 20mm cannons still replaced 7.62mm MGs on fighters. > > Because 7.62mm couldn't do the job any more. Actually, even better is a round that goes through the front of the armor and explodes without putting a hole in the back of the armor. > German WWII bomber interceptors went to 30mm when general- > purpose fighters had 20mm, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MK108 This was because medium bombers needed a lot of LMG hits to damage a heavy bombers a lot of HMG bullets. Exploding cannon shellls, even 20mm or 30mm, were another matter. >> > My suit has DR 360, but there will be softer targets on the >> > battlefield which do not rate the big guns. >> >> DR 360 laminate? >> >> So I figure 6dx20 for reliable penetration (given the curve of >> 6d6), so that works out to: 6dx7(3) for APFSDS, 6dx4(10) HEAT >> or 6dx8(5) HEDP required to hole a suit. > > The 40-lb. blaster does 6d*25, which leaves a margin to deal > with an up-armored suit. The 50mm railgun I have tentatively designed is just under 48 lbs with 20 shells and a rechargable power cell (I assume the magazine and battery is replaced as one unit and can be done in the field by the user. With a RoF of 1, it can fire for 20 seconds in combat.
