John replied to me:
If I look at movies and TV shows like Alien, Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon
5, Stargate, ... the spacecraft have much more room for their crews. That
could be a cinematic necessity -- room for the actors and the camera crew
-- or it means that spacers will get more than the minimum room from the
Vehicles rules. How do you explain that, if the setting doesn't have
post-scarcity economics?
Movies and TV shows don't think about this stuff, or if they do,
reject any economic constraints in favour of making it easier for the
viewers to identify with the characters and their environment?
Certainly part of the answer. But how many books cram typical spacers
into 500 cf per person? Consider that those 500 cf are not just for a
cabin, they also include a share of the corridors, lounges, kitchens,
mess halls, and sanitary facilities. 8' by 8' by 8' is not much.

Onno
