Maybe do a sci-fi show and use a Japanese WW2 super sub as the setting, compacts is the world..

But then it was an evacuation by submarine from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, where the sub went and ended up at, hum.. opps this does not look like Japan, grin.

It is the same reason that TV shows show people with massive apartments -- the camera crews need the room to move around.

If you want to check what reasonable minimum values are, I would check soviet submarines. They really pack the people in there.
