Jon replied to me:
Part of the reason for the four man crew is that they're doing their own field
maintenance on the thing, whereas the fighter jock has a crew at the airbase
for that. Another reason for the crew is the tank's weapons aren't fixed front.
Turret can and will be pointing every which way, which would be disorienting if
you're also driving. (Much less driving at supersonic speeds...) Even
off-boresight missiles are a matter of indicating a bad guy and telling the
missile to sic them, not aiming a single projectile with no homing ability.

Yes, but is that enough to explain a factor of four?

* Even if you don't fire off-bore, you have to recognize and dodge off-axis threats. * Are air tactics easier than ground tactics? Fewer obstacles, at least if you fly high, and terrain-following flight has gone out of fashion in recent wars like Iraq and Syria. (Perhaps they should put sergeants into jets and captains into tanks? Nah ...) * Are modern aircraft replacing the "guy in back" with advice from the AWACS? What happens if they are no longer survivable, not available in sufficient numbers, or unable to communicate?

Regards,
Onno
