Greek Phalanx vs Roman Legion.

Greek was meant to push and hold. To anchor itself on valley walls and push the enemy or not allow the enemy to push them, but it could change flank and turn but enmass and not all that fast.

Roman Legion, was smaller and less tied to anchoring itself on walls/valleys walls and like and it could wheel/turn and change facing quickly.

Onno,

Your comment about flanking got me thinking...you don't need to use the
entire suit to flank. Even now we have grenades that can flank. I'd think
that a single non-flying human supported by a cadre of drones would be more
effective than a single man in a flying suit. I think another question is
how much cover helps. If I can hide behind a concrete wall and it provides
cover and concealment, great. If I'm in an environment that's so lethal
that the car doesn't matter and I can expect to be detected anyway...that
sort of negates the whole purpose of hiding behind it.

Reminds me of working out the implications of some high TL weapons years ago. I think it was disruptors. You really can't take cover because the weapon can go right through a quarter mile of solid rock. Other lower TL weapons have to dig a tunnel with multiple shots but some of the high RoF/continuous ones do it in just a few seconds.
