Stephen replied to me:

I think the genre conventions are going to end up being the decision for
anything about TL9. As for why humans need to be there at all? I'd
imagine jamming would be an issue and there might be other challenges to
require a biological presence at the front.

So keep the drones relatively small and stupid, and let the biological player characters call the shots?

For the drones I was imagining something about the size of a hobby quad
rotor. I may have to play around with stating some of these buggers out
to see what it'd take to be able to knock out several hundred points of DR
and the squishy inside.

Keep in mind that it has to detect the suit, and avoid the point defense fire on the way in. I'd be thinking about something in the 10-20 lbs. range, with a vectored reactionless thruster, power cell, and halfway decent stealth.

50 lb. super thruster: 1.5 lbs.
rD cell: 5 lbs.
Computer: 0.75 lbs.
Self-destruct: 2 lbs.
Sensors: ???
Commo: ???
---------------------
Volume: approx. 0.2 cf

Area: 2.5 sf
Advanced, heavy structure: 2.1 lbs.
DR 20 advanced composite, basic stealth, basic emission cloaking, basic sound baffling, intruder chameleon: 5.75 lbs.

Perhaps a bit less armor. DR 20 is plenty for environmental hazards and not enough to stop many attacks.

Regards,
Onno
