as far as the horror stories its just that stories from people that tried to install vista on a old computer and trying to use the old periphials like printers, scanners and monitors. and didn't know what they were doing and the computer manufacturers greed, selling computers that were not really vista readyy, but were xp computers with the vista ready logo on the case.
if you are buying all new equiptment go with vista.
its far more secure then xp will ever be. even more secure if you run it as a standard user, not as administrator. the only issue doing this is that you have to unload w e and reload as an administrator when a program has to be run as administrater
openbook,firefox, i e and windows mail will run as a standard user with w e .
