The long and the short of it is that finding drivers for Vista is not
a pain-free process.
I'm glad we're still in agreement. <g>

my computer was not new. but the vista upgrade adviser program said
my computer and printer was vista basic compatable the scanner was 6
years old and i was useing it with win98.
while i was searching online i could not find out when the different
periphials were made. the same thing at office max the only place i
can goto for my stuf.
unless the store has the instruction guides available or if the date
is stamped on the sticker on the unit there is no way to know when
they were made. some place like del might have all this info and
would know what to put together to build the system you want and
make sure everything has vista or xp drivers for them.

I'm confused. One minute you say my statement isnt' true and the
next you give factual examples of how hard it is to get hold of the
Vista drivers.
Contradiction? Surely not!

not true. although i only have a scanner and printer my hp 5200
scanner is not being supported by hp.
i had to buy another one.
but i bought the hp 6210 all in one new at office max and found
out that it was also discontinued all the periphials you find at
the store are at least 2 years old.
but i did check on hp to find out if they had vista drivers for
the all in one before i bought it. the vista drivers were not
included with the one i bought. none of there periphials were
vista ready last year when i bought it.

Presumably you'll be able to get all the drivers for your peripherals.
No problem at all on that front.
if only!

sorry about posting to the list. i deleted the original message.
as far as the horror stories its just that stories from people
that tried to install vista on a old computer and trying to use
the old periphials like printers, scanners and monitors.
and didn't know what they were doing and the computer
manufacturers greed, selling computers that were not really
vista readyy, but were xp computers with the vista ready logo on the case.
if you are buying all new equiptment go with vista.
its far more secure then xp will ever be. even more secure if
you run it as a standard user, not as administrator.
the only issue doing this is that you have to unload w e and
reload as an administrator when a program has to be run as administrater
openbook, firefox, i e and windows mail will run as a standard
user with w e .
