I agree here but I usually only do it once every 3 or 6 months unless I have been downloading and or uninstalling a bunch of times smile, Craig R.

Absolutely correct,
also with ntfs, defragmentation isn't necessary that often.

I use fat32 on many of my drives
for-going the extra security of a journaling file system,
in favor of better low level accessibility,
but that's just me.

But these manufacturers see these people comming.

People feel warm and fuzzy if they think they're making their systems run better.

And the computer mags are full of endorsement apps so they can make money.

Many so called windows tweak and maintainance will help in one area of windows, but mess up something else.

For instance, getting faster boot-up by deleting pre-fetch,
but then your other programs will take longer to load.

Unless your really clued in, most of this stuff amounts to robbing peter to pay paul.

I defrag about once every month or so at the very most.

You don't need to do many of these tasks that often. You shouldn't have
to defrag your HD every week. In fact, defragging too often can shorten
the life of your HD.

Exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.

There's a whole market which has grown up around these kinds of
cleaning apps, making people think they're computers are going to run
better if they do this or that,
and unless you are very technical,
and understand what's up, you will often fix one thing, butbreak
something else.

Most of the time with tweaking internet settings and such, or
cleaning temp files,
you won't do any lasting damage, but the registry is the achiles heel
of windows.

Mess that up, and your in trouble.

So my registry edits are very conservative.
and very specific to a function.

Because, my friends, there is no way a general purpose registry clean
can know what belongs to what ahead of time,
because there aren't always log files,
and apps can be written all different kinds of ways
and there are just too many dependancies.

It is not for no reason that microsoft doesn't recommend registry
cleaners.

Disk Image your system when things are running right,
and you'll always be able to go back to a good place.
