You're right. They are not separate. And, windows functions the same
way. If you have the main volume control in windows turned up all the
way, you can get a wide volume range with, for example, the wav volume.
But, if you turn that main volume control down, other volume controls
will vary the volume, but the maximum volume is less.
This works the same way with the braillenote MPower notatakers as well.

Well, I made a very important discovery today. If I increase the
speech volume to ten, it allows me to increase the media player
substantially I thought they were totally separate, but apparently
they aren't.
