I volunteer myself, and I know that there are a handful of other  
people also willing to do this - If you want to create a branch, say  
so on IRC, and I'll tell you the commands to type. Then, when you're  
ready to merge trunk up to your branch, say so, and someone will help  
you with that. And when you're ready to merge back to trunk, likewise.

Yeah, it's scary the first few times, but it's reversible. Any  
breakage can be reverted. So even if you screw something up, it's not  
a big real. It can be reversed. svn makes it very safe to experiment.  
And there are dozens of  sandbox svn repos out there that you can  
experiment in.
