While return policies at box stores are great, the damage they do to our society in return outweighs any personal game, unfortunately.

The riff raff in society does the most damage. Many "purchase" tools etc. from stores like Sears with generous return policies, to just use them for one job and then return them. Some pass the tool around among their friends to try to wear it out before they return it. This gives the effect of free rent on the tools that should be rented if the user has no intention of keeping the tool.

I am not Sears. I repair and sell computers. Satisfaction is not included in my warranty. I have never allowed any item to be returned. (On rare occasions I have voluntarily taken an item back in exchange for another item more suitable to my customer etc.) The 3 day cooling off policy (a customer can cancel the deal within 3 days if they change their mind) for big ticket items is for mail order, only, in most states, I think. My deals are final. There is no law I know of that forces me to allow a return within 3 days.

When you use quality components and custom build a computer it can not be a lemon. I have not built a lemon in over 270 of them. The most serious failures I have seen (not counting electrical surge damage) could be fixed in minutes by changing out the power supply or motherboard. For some changing a motherboard is a major overhaul. Changing a motherboard is a quick pit stop for my customers. My point here is changing out the whole computer is a cop-out to cover for inferior computers. The customer loses their valuable data etc. if they have not backed it up when the whole computer is changed out.

If there was more true service, then changing the whole thing out would be less necessary. Swapping out a television is not a big deal. Swapping out a computer is very much of an inconvenience as you do not just take it home, plug it up and all things are back as they were before the failure.
