Wow! What strange topics we can get into. As Joanne mentioned we bought two
Rauschpfeifs from the Cips. We both play Shawms as well as lots of other
medieval and renaissance wind instruments. We also both swore, long before
we met each other that we would "never" buy rauschpfeifs. Then a friend of
mine ask us to start playing for a Jousting group. They want fanfares and
other music for in-between jousts. We didn't even think twice. Shawms are
wonderful, but there is no way I am risking my reeds outside at ren faires
and the like. Cornamusen, a muted capped double reed, and crumhorns are
wonderful, but a little on the soft side, just were not right for that
venue. The only choice was the Rauschpfeifs. There was no question about
whose to buy. Pavel Cip and Sons are incredible builders. When Petr, the
English speaking/writing son, said they were building a protype of a tenor I
immediately ordered it and Joanne ordered the Alto. There was no way we were
going to buy Moeck or any other builder. We both have experience with other
builder's rauschpfeifs and they were just too obnoxious and painful to play.
(I'm talking painfully loud and obnoxious.) We have been playing the most
wonderful bladderpipes, folk clarinets, and the world's best gemshorns from
them for several years. Though we had never seen their Rauschpfeifs we did
not hesitate to purchase from them. I'm glad we did. Though they are
extremely loud, as all rauschpfeifs are, they both have amazingly beautiful
tones. The tenor has the tone quality of an english horn on steroids. The
alto is smooth and just loud, not obnoxious. We have already decided that
we are buying their single bladderpipes because we wants some that are not
droned.
The other nice thing about the Cips is the price. Right now the cost of a
Cip alto is: $278. The tenor is running: $411. That is a far cry from the
cost of all the other builder I have checked out.
Moeck only makes Sopranino and Soprano, running about $590 and $632. Though
Moulder makes Sopranino to Tenor, they are more than 4 times the cost of the
Cip instruments and I wouldn't bet on them being any better. I honestly
cannot imagine that they could be any better than my Cip tenor and his tenor
is running almost $2,000.
My feeling is if the Cips make it, it is worth it!

Subject: [HG] Rauschpfeif?
Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 16:10:48 -0500
Greetings all,
I'm thinking of buying a Rauschpfeif. I have very little experience
with reed instruments. Can someone recommend a maker (I'm in the US)
I know this is a HG list, but I figure a number of people must play with
these noisy instruments as well. Does anyone know anything about this
maker? (Link below) He seems to make rauschppfeifs in G which would be
fabulous with my D-G gurdy. Unfortunately, his site is in German, which
means my understanding is pretty limited to pictures and words that look
similar to English. Any recommendations regarding playing and buying a
rauchpfeif would be appreciated.
