How odd for this to come up just now. I have been playing at the Acadiana Medieval Faire, with my Tekerolant(Nagy), lap harp, and oud or fiddle, etc., and one of the fellas in one of the groups playing,,l'ensemble Cercamon, from Montreal, plays one. This thing RULES. Never heard anything quite so,,well,,I don't remember any instrument sending shivers up my spine like this thing, and I suppose it is an alto, from the sound of it. He showed it to me close up when I asked if it were a shawm(family), and if it were double reed,,both true. He told me it's a Moeck.(maker) He told me to check different vendors, as this maker is available through more than one, though he didn't specify if Moeck has a site. I just walked in the door from day 3, so haven't had time to check, and saw your post, and thought I'd tell you my experience.

Today while they were playing, my Tek was in A, and he was playing it in A minor(might have been dorian,,didn't check for sure), because my drone was right on A, and they were about 30 yards away. They (Cercamon) have a site, if you google them. He may have more than one, but mainly he played this one, so it may be just that one, as well as whistles(he can play two at once.)

There is another person on this list who can testify to the power of this instrument; she was right next to me on Saturday when they kicked off. They have a gaita, too, but it can't keep up with the Rauschpfief, volume wise. When he starts in with that thing, it gets magical. They do Mediteranean, Languedoc, etc., etc.

Greetings all,
I'm thinking of buying a Rauschpfeif. I have very little experience with reed instruments. Can someone recommend a maker (I'm in the US) I know this is a HG list, but I figure a number of people must play with these noisy instruments as well. Does anyone know anything about this maker? (Link below) He seems to make rauschppfeifs in G which would be fabulous with my D-G gurdy. Unfortunately, his site is in German, which means my understanding is pretty limited to pictures and words that look similar to English. Any recommendations regarding playing and buying a rauchpfeif would be appreciated.
