I think it may have been Baines in his history of woodwind but not too sure
(that was back in the 70's too) but is it as hard to blow as the bombarde?
I just can't summon a lot of puff these days due to this pesky diaphragm of
mine. I can just about manage the lower clarinet notes, penny whistle etc
and just about the practice highland chanter I have (although  bit dizzy
after a few tunes). It's amazing just how many instruments use the stomach
muscles in some way or another. Even my beloved Wheatstone Aeola is getting
heavy.
Maybe I'll take up the paper and comb.................

And much, much more expensive.  Whoever recommended krumhorns for children
must have had an evil sense of humor.
