Does a Crumhorn take as much? I have seem them extolled as the perfect school instrument as they are "so easy to play and much simpler than the recorder" and have always hankered after one for the last 30 years. Don't want another instrument kept in it's box though! I find the crumhorn easy, especially the lower voices. Tenor is nothing. Now I admit I'm talking Kelischek with synthetic reeds. It does not take anywhere as much. The problem with crumhorn is that the tone has a lot of "flex", and the holes are only moderately accurate. One must tune each note as one plays it. I found that easy, but I have not been able to teach that to everyone. It comes naturally, or it doesn't. I usually had the group "tune" before any piece with reeds. That means blowing the first chord and adjusting air pressure until they match. Now, the kortholt is even easier, but quieter.
