Today, the last Faire day, I asked the player in l'ensemble Cercamon just which one he was using, and he told me it was a sopranino in F. Mind you, he's playing A minor pieces(dorian or aeolian doesn't matter so much because he's in the first five notes of the scale, not attaining to the determinative sixth degree, in the main.) F would be proper, and right there, for A aeolian, while you'd need F# for dorian. Right? You'll all note, no doubt, that he'd have to be playing A phrygian on an F instrument, and I mentioned that, and he said you can blow around it, and get the notes you need/want. He also said, when I told him I was getting dead pages off of the main Moeck site, to go to Susato, and have a look there. It didn't grate my ears any. I thought it sounded beautiful, and magical. Louder than all get out, but it didn't have the annoying high frequency presence that can make things hurt. Stands out head and shoulders above the other instruments, which adds to the wonderful effect of it, to me. Has alot to do with the player, I'm sure. He's quite accomplished.
