Hello Orest,

thanks for your recherche, for me its very hard to get any information out u that area because of the language and letters problem. On the other side its "just arround the corner", I am at a place right now about 50 km from the Polish border and Vienna where I live is some 600 km from Ukraine.

My interest is finding out about what acctually goes on in that area concerning the hurdy-gurdy. So I tend to use "Ukraine" and "Poland" in a modern georaphical meaning. As the history of this areas is so complex and unpleasent I rather avoid the lingual, "national", "ethnic" aspects.

It might be interesting to notice that singing with the hurdy-gurdy is quite common in southern Germany and Austria too. When I tell people what instrument I play they often ask in response "and what do you sing?". Lokking into historical sources we find a bit of evidence for both, the hurdy-gurdy as accompaignment for singing and as a dance music instrument. And there is a tradition for dance songs.

I hope I will get a better view on the hurdy-gurdy in Ukraine and Poland today by the time. All the hard facts like instrument makers I enter into the hurdygurdy-wiki. I also will open a wiki-page collecting links.

kind regards,

Simon Wascher
