I think any updates to the water system will only occur if their next
project has an abundant amount of water environments. Most of HL2's levels
didn't contain much water (aside from those speed boat levels). It's a
pretty expensive investment to update the water system if less than 20% of
your game takes advantage of it.
Far Cry on the other hand takes place on an island so it makes sense for
them to concentrate a good chunk of their efforts on water effects and
foliage.
Maybe if someone came out with a kickass water-based mod for the source
engine...

Subject: [hlcoders] source sdk future?

Dear Mike Durand,

Is there any chance that Valve is
going update the water system for hl2? I
don’t mean to sound pretentious but the current hl2 water system using flat
bump mapped water is somewhat outdated and it would be nice to see some
vertex
deforming water for the source engine in the next SDK update even if it’s
not
released as part of ep2. Seems like most
of the new engines such as Crysis and what I’ve been seeing for Allen wake
have
it..I wonder also what Valve are doing to update the tools for the SDK so
keep
up with the competition …I don’t want to step
on your toes..I love the source SDK but I would also like to see some big
changes.thanks
