Linux 2.6.15 and higher kernels are locked down to 500 hz or below
instead of 1000hz like the older kernels. You have to raise the hz of
your kernels to 1000 then you'll get the lost performance back.

I totally agree with most of that except naturally ubuntu won't be
able to
hold a high fps if its kernel freqency is set lower (so you may find
fps is
capped to 125 for example whatever you do with that kernel setting,
typically max fps possible would be half kernel setting). I agree with
all
of the rest, especially all about peformance when full (what I was
trying to
say in a roundabout way).
If the kernel was indeed running at a lower freq. then you would see
less CPU usage as higher fps kernels use an extra 2%-5% just on the
extra overhead let alone the fact the server is doing more to get the
higher fps.
I recently moved a customers AMD64 3200 from windows to Linux.
Previously they had a 40 man server. We found as soon as it got over 30
players it would now start to lag. We upgraded their processor to a
AMD3700 but the box could still not run their server properly and they
have dropped it to 32 players.
It is glaringly obvious that the Linux code needs to be looked at and
possibly optimized. I remember when 1.6 used to be so much better on
Linux than windows and there is no reason that i can think of that this
should not be the same today. Linux servers can be optimized to run only
the valve code and don't need to load extra resources that will not be
used.
Can someone at Valve look into this for us Alfred as it will mean that
we can run more game servers which is certainly in valves interest.
I would also like to point out that I believe it is illegal according to
MS XP EULA to host Game Servers on Windows XP. While i'm sure its not
really a problem for people running their own box but those big
companies running hundreds of servers on Windows XP should buy windows
server versions.

Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and
every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt
condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their
righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
