I'd definitely run 64-bit Linux on any hardware that's new enough to be 
able to run it, especially machines with 4GB or more of RAM. The main 
advantage of 64-bit is that the OS can much more easily use all the 
memory in the system without having to jump through hoops.

The performance gains aren't huge by any means, and most likely you 
won't even notice them at all, but things do run a bit better. Any 
32-bit software runs just fine as well as long as you make sure that you 
have the right libraries.

I'm running 5x L4D1, 7x L4D2 and a TF2 server on a 64-bit Debian Lenny 
server with 12GB RAM. It works a treat.
