A bit of Googling has revealed that the concert took place in 1969, not 1968, and so was about a year after the Soviet tanks rolled into Prague. It also marked the debut of the Czech Philharmonic at the Lucerne Festival. All the rest is accurate. Anyone know if recordings were being made of the festival concerts at that time?

The solo horn was either M. Stefek or B. Tylsar, I do not recall. The whole orchestra played magnificently, not to mention the solo horn and the entire horn section with that lovely Czech vibrato. What was even more memorable, however, was the context. Czechoslovakia had just been invaded by the Soviet army (August 21, 1968), and the concert audience gave a standing ovation to the orchestra, both in response to the wonderful performance and as an expression of solidarity with the players and their now-overrun country. One by one, little Czech flags emerged from some players' pockets and were waved, albeit cautiously (I assume for fear of reprisals back home). I wonder if there is a recording of that concert.
