A bit of Googling has revealed that the concert took place in 1969, not 1968,
and so was about a year after the Soviet tanks rolled into Prague. It also
marked the debut of the Czech Philharmonic at the Lucerne Festival. All the
rest is accurate. Anyone know if recordings were being made of the festival
concerts at that time?

I shall never forget a live performance of Mahler V that I heard at the
Lucerne Festival in late August of 1968 with the Czech Philharmonic, Vaclav
Neumann conducting. The solo horn was either M. Stefek or B. Tylsar, I do not
recall. The whole orchestra played magnificently, not to mention the solo horn
and the entire horn section with that lovely Czech vibrato. What was even more
memorable, however, was the context. Czechoslovakia had just been invaded by
the Soviet army (August 21, 1968), and the concert audience gave a standing
ovation to the orchestra, both in response to the wonderful performance and as
an expression of solidarity with the players and their now-overrun country.
One by one, little Czech flags emerged from some players' pockets and were
waved, albeit cautiously (I assume for fear of reprisals back home). I wonder
if there is a recording of that concert.

I was privileged to hear Solti and Chicago perform Mahler 5 live. While it is
certainly nice to have the recorded set, it doesn't begin to compare with the
absolutely electrifying live performance. What a memory.

New York Phil and Chambers? Not so much...

I suggest the Chicago Symphony with Solti-- Clevenger is amazing, as is the
entire brass section.

The recording used to be available on vinyl (remember that stuff?) as a boxed
set through London/Decca [ffrr: full frequency range recording] #CSA-2228.

Truly spectacular playing!

Sincerely,
